Ship 34 (S34) was the second Block 2 Starship second stage prototype. Stacking of S34 commenced on September 19th, 2024 in High Bay and was completed on November 18th, 2024. The ship conducted a very long static fire, which lasted about 57 seconds.
S34 flew with Booster 15 (B15) on Starship Flight Test 8. The booster was successfully caught despite suffering engine failures. S34 later developed a fire in its aft section at roughly the same time frame as S33 with a hot spot being observed on one of the Rvac engine bells, a short moment later, the latter failed catastrophically followed up by subsequent failures on all 3 Sea-level engines leading to a loss of attitude control. S34 proceeded to tumble while the 2 remaining RVac continue to fire. The ship then disintegrated and reentered over the Caribbean.
Brief mishap investigation update by SpaceX prior to Flight 9 revealed that, unlike Ship 33, the ship actually mitigated harmonic response. The major issue that haunted S34 was a faulty engine joint that brought leaked fuel and caused fires to the false ceilings. Nitrogen purges wasn’t able to protect the raptors and eventually lead to an energetic event, detachment of raptor SL and a RVac and loss of attitude control.
History[]
Some parts were originally potentially spotted for a V1 S34 such as a Nosecone and aft skirt, however their assignment was unclear and they were subsequently scrapped or moved towards the scrap yard. See The Nosecone Exodus for more details. In addition, an eDome section labelled S34.1 was previously scrapped and a CH4 Header Tank previously designated for S34 shipped out of Starbase to McGregor for testing. As spotted on 23 September 2024, the weld seam between the nosecone and payload bay was much improved.[1]
On the 19th of September 2024, Ship 34's Payload Bay and Nosecone were rolled out of Starfactory to the High Bay and stacked. On the 23rd of September, the stacked Nosecone and Payload Bay were rolled back into Starfactory. On October 8th, the stack was moved into Mega Bay 2 for further stacking operations. The final aft engine section of S34 was rolled into Mega Bay 2 on November 17th and stacking was completed on November 18th 2024 in a total of 60 days.
On the 15th of January 2025, S34 was rolled out to the Massey Outpost for cryogenic proof testing, where it first conducted a cryogenic proof test of its CH4 tank, followed by a separate full cryogenic test, both on the 17th. Another full cryogenic was completed on the 18th and then S34 was rolled back later the same day.
On the 28th of January 2025, engine installation was confirmed to have commenced on S34 with one RVac moving from Starfactory to MB2. Another RC stand was also removed indicating more engines may have been installed while the door was closed potentially prior to the 28th.
On the 10th of February 2025, Ship 34 was moved to the Massey Outpost for Static Fire testing. This was conducted on the 12th, with the longest full duration static fire (~57 seconds). Ship 34 was then moved back to Mega Bay 2 on the 12th/13th February 2025.
